On this episode, Jason Hartman interviews one of Forbes Magazine “30 under 30” entrepreneurs, Matt Mickiewicz, co-founder of popular websites SitePoint.com, 99designs.com, and most recently, Flippa.com. Matt began his journey at around the age of 15, at the beginning of the dotcom boom, building websites as a hobby. He had to do a lot of research to learn about HTML, domains, webhosting, etc, and he thought if he had to do so much research, other people were probably struggling also and could benefit from a website full of those resources, which eventually became SitePoint.com.
This project took off very quickly until the peak of the stock market bubble in 2000. Matt and his partners found themselves scrambling to change how they brought in revenue. Matt shares the many innovative steps that led to the spin-off of 99designs in 2008, such as design contests that led to actual work requests for designers. 99designs.com is the leading crowdsourced marketplace for graphic design. In 2009, Flippa.com was founded and is a marketplace for buying and selling websites via an auction format. Matt offers some valuable advice to others wishing to grow their businesses.
Matt Mickiewicz was named to the Forbes Magazine “30 under 30” list in 2012, co-founded 99designs which has hosted more than 130,000 design contests and paid out more than $30 million to designers, while winning a 2010 Webby Award for “Best Web Service” and raising $35 million from Accel Partners. Matt has also co-founded Flippa.com which has helped entrepreneurs sell more than $70 million in websites & domain names. INC Magazine named Matt to their “30 under 30” list in 2011. He also mentors startups at GrowLab in Vancouver, speaks at conferences and events around North America, and was named to Business Insiders “30 Founders to Watch” list.
